Thinking About Buying a Horse?

Live the Horse Life Before Buying Into It.

We want new horse owners to succeed before they ever bring a horse home.

When you invest in yourself first, investing in the horse actually makes sense. You know how to problem solve. You know what to look for. Your schedule and your budget are ready for what responsible ownership really takes.

Buying a horse is exciting. It’s the beginning of a whole new chapter, and it’s natural to have questions as you imagine what that life could look like.

If you’ve been searching “thinking about buying a horse,” you may be wondering:

  • How do I recognize the horse that’s right for me?
  • What does horse ownership really look like day to day?
  • What skills help horse ownership feel natural and enjoyable?
  • How do I build confidence through experience?
  • What does it actually feel like to be part of the horse world?

Those questions are part of the journey. They often lead to something even more valuable than finding the right horse. They lead to becoming the kind of horseman who is ready to enjoy one.

Live the Horse Life Before Buying Into It

At United Mustangs of America (UMA) on California’s Central Coast, near San Luis Obispo, our focus is simple: help people become capable, confident horsemen through real experience.

Horse ownership is about far more than purchasing a horse. It’s a lifestyle built on understanding, partnership, and everyday moments that create lasting confidence.

Through our Horse Handling Science program, students, whether they’re first time horse owners or returning after years away, experience handling, groundwork, riding, horse behavior, communication, and daily horse care alongside our herd of mustangs. As those experiences build, the horse world begins to feel familiar. Confidence grows naturally, and questions gradually become experience.

Our goal isn’t to prepare you to buy a horse.

Our goal is to help you become the kind of person who can truly enjoy living with one.

Horse Ownership Is a Lifestyle

Life with horses has a rhythm all its own.

It’s early mornings at the barn.

It’s learning to understand another living being without words.

It’s building trust one interaction at a time.

It’s noticing small changes that most people would never see.

It’s discovering that every day offers another opportunity to learn, grow, and deepen the partnership.

These are the experiences that make horse ownership so rewarding.

Start With an Introductory Session

Reading about horses is one thing. Experiencing life with them is something entirely different.

Our two hour Introductory Session introduces you to Horse Handling Science through hands-on learning, time with our herd of mustangs, and personal coaching designed around your experience level.

Whether you’re exploring horse ownership for the first time, returning after years away, or simply wondering if this lifestyle is right for you, this is a welcoming place to begin.

It’s $100. It’s two hours. And it could be the first step toward a lifelong partnership with horses.

We keep these sessions small so every student gets real, individual coaching, so if a date is calling to you, it’s worth grabbing before the week fills up.
